چکیده

Observers deteeted unidireetional motion of isotropie dot patterns following exposure to (1) broadband noise eontaining all direetions of motion, or (2)noise from whieh eertain sets of direetion had been filtered. The amount of masking varied with the set of directions filtered from the noise, yielding broad directional tuning functions. The breadth of an observers's tuning funetion corresponded to the precision with which the observer could recognize small differenees in direction of motion.

Auditory temporal summation in infants and adults: effects of stimulus bandwidth and masking noise.

A visually reinforced operant procedure was employed to determine the behavioral thresholds of 6- to 7-month-old infants and adults for stimuli of various bandwidths and durations. Experiment 1 compared absolute thresholds for broadband and 1/3-octave filtered clicks and 300-msec noise bursts. For adult subjects, the difference in threshold for clicks and noise bursts was quite comparable in th...

Auditory masking threshold estimation for broadband noise sources with application to speech enhancement

This paper addresses issues encountered in the use of an Auditory Masking Threshold (AMT) for speech enhancement and proposes an algorithm to improve AMT estimation for broadband noise sources. We determined that while AMT estimation is fairly accurate, and hence an enhancement scheme based on AMT can suppress audible noise to a greater extent for low frequency colored noise sources, the algori...

The relationship between MOC reflex and masked threshold.

Otoacoustic emission (OAE) amplitude can be reduced by acoustic stimulation. This effect is produced by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex. Past studies have shown that the MOC reflex is related to listening in noise and attention. In the present study, the relationship between strength of the contralateral MOC reflex and masked threshold was investigated in 19 adults. Detection thresholds w...

An Adaptive Hierarchical Method Based on Wavelet and Adaptive Filtering for MRI Denoising

MRI is one of the most powerful techniques to study the internal structure of the body. MRI image quality is affected by various noises. Noises in MRI are usually thermal and mainly due to the motion of charged particles in the coil. Noise in MRI images also cause a limitation in the study of visual images as well as computer analysis of the images. In this paper, first, it is proved that proba...

Independent coding across spatial scales in moving fractal images

We compared observers' ability to discriminate the direction of apparent motion using images which varied in their spatial characteristic; white or flat spectrum noise, and 1/f noise which has an amplitude spectrum characteristic of natural scenes. The upper spatial limit for discrimination (dmax) was measured using a two-flash random dot kinematogram (RDK), which consisted either of a pair of ...
